Colchester is Britain's 'oldest recorded town'. We have Roman walls, gateways, and ruins of a Roman Theatre, a Roman Circus, and a Roman Temple. In recent years the Roman Circus, and the 'Fenwick Hoard' have come to light, adding even more detail about this period of our history. We have the largest Norman keep in the country, and the town was laid siege to in the English Civil War. Colchester is a thriving town, with new developments like firstsite, and a major investment in the Castle Museum, adding even more to what the town has to offer it's residents and visitors.
